Damage such as this is caused by items like stones and rocks hitting the auto glass, which causes little spiderweb-like cracks near the impact point and chips away at the strength of the auto glass around the area where it was hit. If the chip or crack grows and spreads, it can eventually cause the auto glass to shatter.

Replacing a rear windshield is a relatively simple process that most auto glass shops will be able to do for you. The auto glass will usually be removed by breaking the seal around it with a sharp object and then the new auto glass will be installed in its place. It is important to make sure that the auto glass is fitted properly and that there are no air bubbles between the auto glass and the car frame.
